Certifications and safety

Fitting a gas or solid fuel appliance is not a DIY job and must be carried out by qualified, registered engineers. Here is what those registrations mean, and what you should expect to receive.

What to know

Safety, in plain terms

Gas Safe Register By law, anyone working on gas appliances in your home must be on the Gas Safe Register. Registered engineers carry a Gas Safe ID card showing the types of gas work they are qualified to do — you are entitled to ask to see it.
HETAS HETAS is the government-recognised competent person scheme for solid fuel and biomass heating. A HETAS registered installer can certify that an installation meets the Building Regulations, without a separate building control application.
Your certificate When the installation is complete you receive a certificate — Gas Safe for gas fires, HETAS for solid fuel — confirming it meets the regulations. Keep it safe: you will be asked for it if you ever sell the property.
Carbon monoxide alarms Building Regulations in England require a carbon monoxide alarm in the room when a fixed combustion appliance, other than a gas cooker, is installed or replaced. Alarms have a limited life, so check the expiry date on yours.
Sweeping and servicing A chimney used for solid fuel should be swept at least once a year, and more often if you burn a lot of wood. Gas fires and stoves should be serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Smoke control areas and Ecodesign In a smoke control area you can only burn authorised fuels, unless your stove is an exempt appliance. Since 2022, new wood-burning stoves sold in the UK have had to meet Ecodesign emission limits.

General guidance only. Requirements depend on the appliance, the property and where you live — the survey confirms what applies to your home.
