How often does a gas fire need servicing?
Once a year, by a Gas Safe registered engineer. What a proper service covers, and what can happen if it is skipped.
Once a year, by a Gas Safe registered engineer, is the standard manufacturer recommendation for gas fires and stoves — and servicing is commonly a condition of the warranty.
A proper service is more than a visual check. It covers the burner and pilot assembly, the fuel bed layout (coals and logs sit in a specified pattern, and moving them changes how the fire burns), the flue, the oxygen depletion sensor, gas pressure and soundness, and the glass seal on a glass-fronted fire.
If it is skipped, you can see sooting on the glass and fuel bed, a pilot that becomes unreliable and, in the worst case, a flue that is not clearing properly. Carbon monoxide is a real risk with a neglected appliance.
There is also the paperwork. If you sell the house, a service history alongside the original Gas Safe certificate answers the buyer’s questions before they are asked.
