Fireplaces in period properties around Reading and Henley
Victorian openings, conservation areas and chimneys that have been capped for decades. What is usually possible, and what is not.
Reading, Caversham, Earley, Henley and the villages between them have a great deal of Victorian and Edwardian housing, and period fireplaces bring their own questions.
The opening is usually smaller than you think. Victorian openings — bedroom fireplaces especially — can be very compact. This is where marble and composite marble surrounds come into their own: marble is non-combustible, so the surround can be made to a much smaller scale than a timber one.
Capped chimneys are common, and often recoverable. A stack capped decades ago can frequently be reopened and lined. Sometimes it cannot — a shared flue, or a stack taken down below the roofline. The survey establishes which.
Conservation areas and listed buildings. Henley in particular. External flue terminals and changes visible from the street can need consent, so it is worth knowing what is likely to be acceptable before you settle on a design.
Original features are worth keeping. Where an original fireplace survives, restoring it is often the better option — and it is always worth asking before replacing one.
